A class in a public pool shares the water with lap swimmers, families and other classes. A well-run class looks calm because it was planned. This page explains what that planning involves, using Bishan Swimming Complex as the example. It helps parents know what to look for, and coaches know what to plan.
SwimClasses.sg is independent and does not operate any public pool. Bishan hours and closures: Bishan pool visitor guide.
1. Grouping
- Group by ability first, then age. A nervous beginner in a confident group gets less attention and more risk.
- Keep beginner groups small. The busier the pool, the fewer learners a coach can watch closely.
- Same depth for the whole group. If one learner can't stand where the others can, the group is wrong.
2. Visibility
- The coach positions themselves so every learner is in view at once, usually facing the group with the open pool behind the learners rather than behind the coach.
- Count heads at the start, at every change of activity and at the end.
- Bright or matching caps help a coach pick out their learners among other swimmers.
3. Waiting positions
Learners who are not swimming wait in one agreed place: holding the wall, sitting on the edge with feet in, or standing in shallow water, depending on depth and age. Never behind the coach, never drifting. Short waits keep attention; long queues lose it.
4. Sharing space with the public
- Classes use the space allocated or available under the operator's rules. They don't own a lane.
- Avoid blocking ends of lanes where lap swimmers turn.
- Move the group if the area gets crowded; don't push other users out.
- Keep equipment (kickboards, noodles) contained and out of walkways.
5. When it gets crowded
At peak times the plan changes: shorter swims, more wall-based drills, smaller sub-groups, or a quieter corner. If the coach can't keep every learner safe and visible, they shorten the lesson or stop. That is the right call.
6. Weather and closures
Bishan's pools are outdoors. When lightning is detected nearby, staff clear the pool. A good class has a plan for that: where learners wait, who parents collect from, how missed time is handled. The complex is normally closed on Thursdays.
7. Before and after the class
- One handover point for children, agreed in advance.
- The coach supervises their learners only; siblings stay with their own adult.
- Learners don't enter the water before the coach arrives or after the class ends unless their own adult is supervising.
What parents can look for
A calm coach who can see everyone, learners waiting in one place, short clear instructions, and a coach willing to change the plan when the pool is busy.
