Group swim classes: how to pick a good one

Check the class size

Ask how many learners are in the class and how many coaches are with them. Fewer learners per coach means more turns, more feedback and more time actually swimming. For beginners, smaller is noticeably better.

Check how learners are grouped

A well-run group puts learners of similar ability together. Ask how a new learner's level is assessed and what happens when a child progresses faster or slower than the rest of the group.

Who group classes suit

• Children who are comfortable in water and enjoy learning with others.
• Families who want a lower cost per lesson.
• Learners happy with a fixed weekly slot.

Group classes are less ideal for very nervous beginners or anyone needing lots of individual attention. They may start better with a private class or a small group.

Kids vs adult groups

Kids group classes are usually organised by age and level. Adult groups exist too, and suit improvers more than complete beginners. See kids swim classes and adult swim classes.

Finding a group slot

Group slots are fixed, so availability depends on whether a class at the right level, day and pool has space. Weekend groups tend to fill first. Availability varies by location, instructor and learner level. Compare days on the schedule page.

What to watch in the first lesson

• How much time each learner spends swimming compared with waiting at the wall.
• Whether the coach can see every learner in the water at once.
• Whether instructions are short and clear for the age group.
• Whether the coach gives each learner at least one individual correction.

Group classes and SwimSafer
